'New York Times' Carpetbagger Blog Gets New Voice

NEW YORK One of The New York Times' most popular blogs, The Carpetbagger, is getting a new lead writer. Media Columnist David Carr, who created it as one of the paper's first blogs four years ago, is handing over the reins to culture reporter Melena Ryzik, according to an announcement.

Ryzik will take over the blog devoted to awards news and gossip on Dec. 1. She has been a general assignment culture reporter, chronicling cultural life in New York for the UrbanEye video series and writes the UrbanEye e-mail -- a daily guide to events around the city.

Carr will continue as a media columnist and a general assignment reporter.

The Carpetbagger blog "is devoted to the ups and downs of Hollywood's award season, taking its audience behind the scenes of major industry events including the Sundance Film Festival, the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards," the announcement said.

Ryzik joined The Times in 2001, writing metro and investigative news. She was a contributing writer for The Times' former celebrity column Boldface Names.
