Former 'E&P' Publisher of the Year Takes Helm at 'The Oregonian'

NEW YORK The Oregonian has appointed a new publisher: N. Christian Anderson III, former publisher and CEO of The Orange County Register. He succeeds longtime publisher Fred Stickel, who retired last month.

Anderson is familiar with Oregon, having grown up in the state and graduated from Oregon State University in 1972, where he was the editor of daily student newspaper The Barometer.

After graduation Anderson worked as city editor of the Albany (Ore.) Democrat-Herald and in 1975 became managing editor of the Walla Walla (Wash.) Union-Bulletin. He then joined The Seattle Times as associate managing editor, and in 1980 became the youngest editor of an American metropolitan newspaper with his appointment as editor of The Orange County Register in Santa Ana, Calif.

In 1989 he was named Editor of the Year by the National Press Foundation and the Register won two Pulitzer prizes during his tenure as editor.

After a brief stint as president and publisher of The Gazette in Colorado Springs from 1994 to 1999, Anderson returned to the Register as its publisher and CEO. He was named E&P's Publisher of the Year in 2007, the same year he left the paper to become a consultant for media companies and investors.
