NEW YORK Today, Editor & Publisher launches a special section of E&P Online highlighting the winners and honorable mentions -- announced last week -- in our 10th annual Photos of the Year competition.

Click here to reach the Photos of the Year contest’s main page, where you can launch 2009 Photos of the Year Gallery showcasing the winners in the Grand Prize, News, Features, Sports, Portraits and Multiple Image/Photo Essay categories, all spanning four circulation groups.

On the main page, you can also click through for the winners of the Video/Multimedia, Unpublished Photos, and People's Choice categories. This year was the first in which E&P recognized one winner in the Unpublished Photo on Assignment category, and 10 People’s Choice photos and six video/multimedia honorable mentions were also recognized.

Featured also on the main page is audio of an interview conducted by E&P Editor Greg Mitchell with Tim Rasmussen, assistant managing editor/photography for The Denver Post -- which took the Grand Prize this year for its stunning multimedia entry “Ian Fisher: American Soldier.” The Denver Post’s winning entry chronicled with extraordinary photographs, videos, and print -- over the course of 27 months -- the recruitment, induction, training, deployment to Iraq, and return from combat of Ian Fisher. This was the first year that video/multimedia entries were judged.

Visitors also can click for bios on the judges of this year’s competition -- Colin Crawford, deputy managing editor/visuals, Los Angeles Times; Santiago Lyon, director of photography, The Associated Press; Alan Taylor, Web developer and blogger, The Boston Globe/Big Picture; and Amber Terranova, photo editor of Nielsen Co. sister publication Photo District News.

“Despite budget cuts at most newspapers, the number and quality of entries this year remained strong,” Mitchell said of this year’s contest. “This was a year of firsts for this competition, including exciting new categories and a video/multimedia submission winning top honors. This also was the first time final winners were selected by photo editors from major newspapers and magazines.”
