NEW YORK Mike Cano has been appointed publisher of San Diego-based Hispanic newspaper El Latino.

Cano, a 25-year veteran of the newspaper industry, most recently was vice president of business development and partnerships for La Opinion in Los Angeles. Previously, he served as president/CEO of Impacto USA, a MediaNews Group Co. weekly Spanish-language paper in Long Beach.

While working for the Dallas Morning News in 2003, Cano helped launch and served as general manager of daily Spanish-language paper Al Dia. The paper’s Web site, aldiatx.com, received the Edward R. Murrow Award the following year.

“Mike brings enormous leadership and a proven track record to El Latino, he is regarded a leading figure in Spanish-language media and we are excited to have him,” Fanny Miller, El Latino's president and CEO, said in a statement.
