CHICAGO Alejandro J. Aguirre, deputy editor and publisher of the family-owned Diario Las Americas in Miami, was elected president of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) at its annual General Assembly in Buenos Aires last week.

Aguirre's father, Horacio, was president of the press freedom group in 1983-84.

Another U.S. newspaper journalist elected to a senior position at the IAPA meeting was Milton Coleman, senior editor of The Washington Post, who was elected second vice president. Coleman will become president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors next April.

Elizabeth Ballantine, director and co-owner of The Durango (Colo.) Herald, was elected treasurer.

Mark Fitzgerald, editor-at-large for Editor & Publisher, was re-elected to a three-year term on the IAPA board of directors.

Scott C. Schurz, vice president and director of Schurz Communications, publisher of the Herald-Times in Bloomington, Ind., is IAPA's honorary life president.
