SAN JOSE, Calif. The Topeka (Kan.) Capital-Journal's CJOnline.com and USAToday.com each picked up two awards at the 2002 EPpy Awards presentation held here Friday night at the E&P 13th Annual Interactive Newspapers Conference & Trade Show. The awards honor outstanding achievements in new media by newspapers.

USAToday.com won awards for Best Design and Best Business Section of a newspaper online service. The Topeka paper won awards for Best Overall U.S. Newspaper Online Service (circulation 50,000 - 99,999) and Best Special Section (News or Event).

Rich Jaroslovsky of The Wall Street Journal was given the Outstanding Individual Achievement Award in recognition of his work at WSJ.com and as founder of the Online News Association.

The winner for best overall U.S. Newspaper Online Service in the national or daily circulation over 250,000 category was the Los Angeles Times' latimes.com. The other best overall U.S. Newspaper Online Services were:

PittsburghLIVE.com, Tribune-Review of Greensburg, Pa.

* Daily circulation 50,000 - 99,999
CJOnline.com, The Topeka Capital-Journal

* Daily circulation under 50,000

In a surprise, the two papers with the most finalist spots went home empty handed. Washingtonpost.com and nytimes.com had garnered eight and seven finalist slots, respectively, but neither was a winner this year.

In the battle of the newspaper chains, Morris Communications Corp. of Augusta, Ga. came out on top with six EPpy Awards. Tribune Co. of Chicago went home with four awards while Gannett Co. Inc. of McLean, Va., won two -- both for USAToday.com.

In their seventh year, the EPpy Awards are sponsored by Editor & Publisher magazine. Nearly 300 entries were submitted for this year's contest, and over 30 independent judges from around the world chose the finalists and winners.
