‘Bizarro’ and ‘Speed Bump’ Cartoonists Among Reuben Finalists

By: E&P Staff

“Bizarro” creator Dan Piraro, “Speed Bump” creator Dave Coverly, and Mad magazine contributor Al Jaffee are the finalists for the Reuben Award as cartoonist of the year.

That’s according to a report today on Alan Gardner’s Daily Cartoonist blog.

Coverly’s comic panel is distributed by Creators Syndicate and Piraro’s by King Features Syndicate. (Piraro is one of four people featured in a March E&P magazine story about syndicated creators who also do stand-up comedy.)

The Reuben is presented during the annual National Cartoonists Society meeting. The 2008 gathering is scheduled for this Memorial Day Weekend in New Orleans.

Among the scheduled speakers during that weekend are Tom Batiuk (“Funky Winkerbean” and “Crankshaft”/King), Mike Peters (“Mother Goose and Grimm”/King and editorial cartoons/Dayton Daily News and King), and Mark Tatulli (“Lio” and “Heart of the City”/Universal Press Syndicate).
