Nazareth, PA (June 11, 2013) Since PaperCheckAdBoss™ (PCAB) from Software Consulting Services, LLC (SCS) went into full production use at the Moline (IL) Dispatch, it has simplified paper checking and reduced clerical errors while providing a 50% labor savings. PCAB uses a combination of image and natural language processing and pattern recognition to automate manual ad measuring and page image verification. Pages are compared to ad manifests and electronic dummies. PCAB provides a back-to-front audit spanning the dataflow from order entry and scheduling through ad production, ad dummying and pagination interfacing. PCAB starts with digital page images working backward, as is usual with auditing tasks.
Over 16 paper checking discrepancy tasks are performed automatically. These include items missing from either the manifest, dummies, edition, zone or page. Checking is also done for correct location, size, appropriate color, etc. All discrepancies are clearly indicated on well designed reports so that a quick and simple scan allows quick identification and efficient handling of exceptions. A PDF page image report supports digital archiving removing the clutter of old newspapers from the accounting department.
The Dispatch uses applications from Brainworks, DPS AdTracker, Layout-8000™ and Inlay™ (both from SCS.) InLay is the interface between Layout-8000 to InDesign® for pagination. PCAB supports many alternative combinations of such applications. If ads are moved during pagination, corrected locations are produced for e-tearsheet systems.
Bette Norris, a member of the Dispatch’s business office staff noted that PaperCheckAdBoss runs with surprising and predictable speed and accuracy.
Dale Atwood, Production Director, noted that PCAB allowed redeployment of clerical staff saving filling open positions.
All agree that having the computer do the checking is a very happy outcome.
