Les Payne is retiring as associate editor of Newsday effective Feb. 10, but will continue to write his weekly column for the Melville, N.Y.-based paper, according to a Newsday memo posted Thursday on Jim Romenesko’s media blog.
Payne — whose column is syndicated by Tribune Media Services — joined Newsday in 1969. The U.S. Army veteran worked as a reporter, copy editor, national editor, editorial writer, and in various other posts.
In the memo, Newsday editor John Mancini wrote that Payne’s “groundbreaking work as a reporter, editor, and leader influenced the breadth, scope, and reach of Newsday journalism as much as any figure in our paper’s 65-year history.”
