Six at ‘San Antonio Express-News’ Receive Philip True Awards

By: E&P Staff

Staffers at the San Antonio Express-News have voted to honor six of their colleagues with the Philip True Award, which is given each year in memory of the newspaper’s former Mexico City bureau chief.

An article in today’s paper says that this year’s awards will go to copy editor/news researcher Douglas Pils, artist/designer Mike Fisher, Benjamin Olivo for his online impact, photographer Nicole Frug?, writer Karisa King, and “unsung hero” Vincent T. Davis.

“The beauty of these awards is that management steps aside and the staff rules. Under that peer pressure, the wisdom of who gets honored and the high quality of the event underscore what a phenomenal bunch of people we have in our newsroom,” Brett Thacker, managing editor of the paper, is quoted as saying. “All the pageantry aside, this night also allows us to pay tribute to the memory of Philip and what he means to the institution.”

True was murdered in December 1998 while on a solo-backpacking trip in the Sierra Madre Occidental.
