In 1990, I worked at the New York Daily News for one year until Tribune sold the paper to Robert Maxwell. During this time the paper was losing money faster than a cut artery. The union over the years had negotiated very lavish terms, especially for pressroom employees. It was impossible to generate profit when the cost of lavish union terms was devouring the paper like a hungry cheetah on a springbok. Not much has changed since 1990 for the paper and no person should be surprised regarding layoffs at the New York Daily News. Ownership of this paper is for egos, not profits.
