Astute readers of The New York Times’ report on its lagging digital innovation were struck by one telling statistic: “Only a third of our readers ever visit [the homepage]. And those who do visit are spending less time: page views and minutes spent per reader dropped by double-digit percentages last year.”

The conclusion by report’s authors: encourage more social sharing.
