WSA’s New Category Calls for Creative Content

Salzburg, May 15th 2013. The internet and the mobile revolution have fundamentally changed today’s global media environment: Six billion mobile devices provide users with the means to comprehensively document their daily lives and extraordinary events – turning them into mobile reporters. At the same time, the relentless stream of mobile information calls for new ways of channelling, filtering and personalising information for consumers.

Due to these game-changing developments, the UN-based World Summit Award (WSA) newly initiated an e-Media & Journalism category for the 2013 contest. WSA is a global initiative that selects and awards the world’s best e-Content and puts it on a global stage at a world congress in Sri Lanka. The newly created e-Media and News category entails using ICTs to report the news and present stories in an interactive way, crowd sourcing new data and sharing information, presenting the works of citizen journalism using the web for text, picture and video reporting, covering natural disasters, public campaigning, multimedia news, mobile media aggregation and search services; new forms of mobile video and m-&e-TV, movies and current affairs.
Calling for local content with global relevance

To take part in the global contest, applicants from 168 UN-member countries are invited to get in touch with their national WSA experts. The experts’ contact information can be found on the WSA homepage Projects can be submitted until July 31st in one of the eight contest categories:

Promoting e-Content that makes a difference

“Our goal is to make the global knowledge society more inclusive”, WSA Chairman Peter A. Bruck states. “Today, the world is almost entirely connected. But in this ocean of products and services, quality e-content is hard to find and local solutions have difficulties to compete with mainstream solutions. WSA provides the answer to this issue, by promoting local content with global relevance”, says Bruck.

Highlight: WSA Contest World Congress 2013 in Sri Lanka

After the national pre-selection period up to July 15th, 2013, a jury of eminent experts will come together in Tallinn, Estonia to evaluate the submissions and select the 40 best products from among hundreds of national nominations. The 40 WSA winners will get the chance to present their products at the WSA World Congress in Sri Lanka, October 24th-26th.

The event will offer a platform for high level experts, industry leaders and government representatives to discuss innovation in mobile content. At the event, an on sight jury will select eight overall winners: The WSA Global Champions 2013.
