Austin American-Statesman Names VP of Innovation and Planning

Steve Dorsey has been named the new vice president, innovation and planning for Cox Media Group’s Austin (Texas) American-Statesman, which publishes newspapers and websites and also acts as a regional commercial printer and distribution company. In his new role, Dorsey will facilitate overall strategy, innovation and portfolio development for the Statesman and serve as a strategic business partner for the leadership and management team. Dorsey joins the Statesman on June 1.

“Steve’s experience and passion for the media industry make him an ideal choice for this new role,” said publisher Susie Ellwood. “He brings a unique blend of creativity, strategic thinking and hands-on experience at product development and implementation. He will be a great fit within the Statesman team.”

Prior to joining the Statesman, Dorsey served as vice president, research and development for the Detroit Media Partnership and spent 11 years at the Detroit Free Press, ultimately as deputy managing editor, design + innovation. He led efforts in Detroit to train and instill the use of consumer insights and ethnographic research methodologies to drive strategic direction.

“I’m excited to be joining the Statesman where there is such a strong heritage and legacy of great journalism and a strong portfolio of products on multiple platforms serving customers 24/7. I look forward to leading strategic planning and product development efforts and using my experience at driving culture change and human-centered design principles to make the Statesman even stronger,” Dorsey said.

Dorsey began his career at The Evening Sun in Norwich, N.Y. and worked at various other newspapers including The Daily Orange (Syracuse University), the Syracuse Newspapers in New York, the York (Pa.) Daily Record and the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader.

Since first volunteering as a Syracuse University student, Dorsey has worked in service to the Society for News Design and the craft for more than 20 years and has held numerous positions within the society, including president in 2011.
