Bluefield Daily Telegraph Names New Publisher

A 35-year veteran of the newspaper business and West Virginia native is the new publisher of the Bluefield (W.V.) Daily Telegraph.

Randy Mooney succeeds Darryl Hudson, who left the Daily Telegraph to pursue a job with a newspaper in Illinois. Mooney was most recently publisher of the Muskogee, Okla., Phoenix. Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. owns the Bluefield and Muskogee newspapers.

“Randy is an experienced hand in this industry who understands the value of providing local news and content that is important to subscribers while creating a vehicle that serves our advertising customers,” said Keith Blevins, chief operating officer for CNHI.

“The Daily Telegraph has a solid management team and hard working, dedicated employees,” said Blevins. “With Randy’s help, we will continue to build on our position as the leader in news and local information for this region.”

Mooney says he looks forward to getting involved in Bluefield and returning to West Virginia.

“I look forward to building on the Daily Telegraph’s record of service to this community,” he said. “We’ll be focused on getting involved in the community to support growth and positive change. It’s also nice to be back in the Mountain State. I’m happy to come home.”

A graduate of West Virginia University, Mooney began his career as a production director for a weekly newspaper west of Charleston, the Kanawha Valley Leader. He then spent 10 years working in advertising and marketing positions for Charleston Newspapers, publishers of the Charleston Gazette and Charleston Daily Mail. Mooney left the state in 1989 to become a marketing director for the Press & Sun-Bulletin in Binghamton, N.Y.

Mooney held executive positions with newspapers in Tarentum, Penn., Salisbury, Md., and Savannah, Ga., before joining CNHI as a vice president for sales and marketing in January 2009. Mooney primarily worked with newspapers in Oklahoma, including the Muskogee Phoenix, before being named publisher of the Phoenix in October 2010.
