California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, announced on Feb. 27 the appointment of Hal Hinderliter as director of the Graphic Communication Institute (GrCI), a non-profit auxiliary organization associated with the university’s Graphic Communication program.

Hinderliter said he planned to focus on the institute’s core competency, training, by combining Graphic Communication Department faculty with a “”hand-picked selection of the industry’s top consultants”” and classroom curricula with “”advanced training methods and technologies.””

GrCI plans to begin offering in May weekly workshops in its training center. Fundamental course curricula will include lithographic, flexographic and digital printing, as well as prepress, post-press, and fulfillment services. Business courses will include estimating, business systems, sales and marketing. Advanced programs will cover such technology standards as PDF/X, XML and JDF.

Most recently an independent consultant, Hinderliter has written several textbooks and created the GATF Imaging Skills Training Curriculum. Previously he was supplier services director for Impresse Corp. and director of the Center for Imaging Excellence at the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation.
