Carlton R. Appleby, Former Publisher of the Escondido Times-Advocate, Dies

Carlton R. Appleby, former publisher of the Escondido Times-Advocate newspaper and a longtime local philanthropist, died Monday at his home in Dana Point.

Appleby, 92, was born in Iowa on Feb. 7, 1923. The cause of death was lung cancer, said his son, Jeff.

Newspapers were always a part of the family story. Appleby’s parents, Frank and Jerene, owned a paper in La Grande, Ore., and papers in Indio and Ontario. The couple had two sons, Carlton and Andrew.
