Charles W. Nutt Jr., who spent nearly 44 years in the newspaper business, including stints at the Elmira Star-Gazette and other Gannett newsrooms, was found dead Wednesday in Georgia. He was 67.
According to authorities, Nutt died from a self-inflicted gunshot.
For the past three years, he was owner and publisher of the Free Times, a free weekly newspaper in Columbia, South Carolina, where he also lived. He had retired from the Gannett Co. in 2010.
