Joseph H. Nicholson Jr., First Openly Gay Big-City Reporter, Dies at 71

Former New York Post reporter Joseph H. Nicholson Jr., the nation’s first openly gay big-city newspaper reporter, died early Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the age of 71. He joined The Post in 1971 and came out to his colleagues in 1980, following a shooting at a West Street gay bar, where two men were killed and six wounded by a deranged man.
