The Boston Globe announced today that Kimberly “Kim” Atkins is joining the Globe as its newest member of The Boston Globe Editorial Board.

As one of the nation’s leading political journalists, Atkins comes to the Globe with sterling credentials. She has been a senior news correspondent for WBUR, covering national political news from Washington, D.C., with a New England focus since 2019. Before that, she was the Washington Bureau chief for The Boston Herald for five years, covering the White House, Congress, the Supreme Court, and national news. And she began her journalism career, after working as a lawyer, with a stint at the Globe from 2001-2003.

“Kim is joining the Globe at a crucial time for the nation and for our journalism,” said Bina Venkataraman, Boston Globe Editorial Page Editor. “With a wealth of experience and national exposure as both an attorney and journalist, I am confident she can provide invaluable perspective to audiences on the issues that face our country this election year and beyond.”

Atkins will be a Senior Writer for Globe Opinion, penning both editorials and columns and playing a pivotal role in new initiatives for Globe Opinion. She will join the Globe on July 20 and be based in the Globe’s DC Bureau. Atkins will also continue her highly visible role as a regular contributor to MSNBC, providing on-air analysis and commentary on the national political news of the day.

In addition to her print and broadcast positions, Atkins has appeared as a political commentator on a host of national and international television and radio networks, including CNN, Fox News, NBC News, PBS, NPR, Sky News (U.K.) and CBC News (Canada).

She also previously served as a guest host of C-SPAN’s morning call-in show “Washington Journal,” where she interviewed lawmakers, public policy experts and journalists about the issues on Capitol Hill.

Atkins is a native of Michigan, and a graduate of Wayne State University, Boston University School of Law and Boston University College of Communication and earned a Master from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

A licensed attorney, she was a litigation and appellate lawyer in Massachusetts from 1998-2000. In 2011, Atkins launched her own independent womenswear fashion design firm.
