This year’s EPPY Awards received more than 400 entries. Winners were selected from an international list of nominations to honor the best in digital media across more than 40 diverse categories. Entries came from media companies large and small worldwide, including local news publishing, broadcast networks, cable news and sports networks, pure-play international websites and niche content publishers. There were additional categories celebrating excellence in college and university journalism.
Solving the news desert crisis will require dismantling the silos between academia and industry and creating a working group immediately dedicated to creating real solutions, a team of journalism professors recently concluded.  The team recently offered an online “News Desert U2: Solutions” conference that brought together local news experts from around the world to brainstorm practical solutions for what academia can do to help the news desert crisis.

Anthony Campbell, the former executive editor and managing editor of The Denver Post who led the paper to a Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 1986 for a series on missing children, has died, according to former associates at the Post. He was 82.

As of Dec. 5, CPJ’s preliminary investigations showed at least 63 journalists and media workers were among the more than 16,000 killed since the war began on Oct. 7 — with more than 15,500 Palestinian deaths in Gaza and the West Bank and 1,200 deaths in Israel. The deadliest day of the war for journalist deaths was its first day, Oct. 7, with six journalists killed; the second-deadliest day occurred on Nov. 18, with five killed.
Phillip Meek, a former president and publisher of the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram, died Nov. 21 in his Michigan home. He was 86.
His political journal challenged liberal and conservative orthodoxies for decades.
Ron DeBrock, an award-winning journalist and editor of The Telegraph (Alton, Illinois) since 2019, died late Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 22, at his home in Godfrey after an illness. He was 62.
