In July 2012, a plane carrying members of a North Carolina National Guard unit crashed in southwest South Dakota as they fought a wildfire. Four crew members were killed and two others were injured. As the first anniversary of the crash approached, Charles Najacht told the Shelby (N.C.) Star, he wanted to do something to honor those who lost their lives. Najacht is publisher of the Custer County Chronicle, a weekly newspaper about 20 miles from the site of the plane crash. Najacht asked for help from the community and donations came in, totaling more than $3,700. On July 1, two large signs were dedicated on National Forest Service land as a memorial.
