More than 800 participants met in Hershey, Pa. April 4-6 for the America East Media Business and Technology Conference, administered by the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association. The conference once again collaborated with 360 Media Alliance to include a circulation-specific registration track for attendees.
Keynote speaker Christian Hendricks, McClatchy vice president of products, marketing and innovation, spoke about the corporate reorganization taking place at his company, along with the move to build a newsroom culture that could take on rapid innovation and change.
Other sessions included creative revenue generators, video, podcasting, virtual reality, and a panel of key newspapers leaders speaking about an industry in transformation.
“The virtual reality, video, creative revenue generation and ‘Print Isn’t Dead!’ sessions elicited a lot of positive feedback and excitement,” vice president of association services Tricia Greyshock said. “Whenever a speaker(s) can offer how to’s and recommendations for specific ways news media organizations can grow revenue, audience or create efficiencies, it’s a win.”
On the sold out tradeshow floor, more than 90 companies exhibited (23 were first-time exhibitors). New this year was the exhibit floor theatre, which offered breakout sessions and supplier sessions. It also encouraged additional traffic to the show floor, said Greyshock, and there are plans to continue the floor theatre at next year’s show.
Overall, Greyshock said she is pleased with this year’s event and the group is already working on session and speaker ideas for 2017.
“There are so many exciting things happening in the industry, and we’ll bring content and programming to America East next year that will benefit large metros, weeklies, online-only publications, and everything in between. We’re also looking into offering more workshops next year, allowing for more deep-dive discussions,” she said.
