Paxton Media Group has purchased the Log Cabin Democrat, a daily newspaper in Conway, Ark., along with three Arkansas weeklies in Clinton, Heber Springs and Newport according to Randy Cope, Managing Director of Cribb, Greene & Cope, who represented GateHouse Media in the sale.
Paxton Media is a family-owned company headquartered in Paducah, Ky. The company publishes daily and weekly newspapers in more than 50 communities in the Midwest and South, including a nearby paper in Russellville, Ark.
“This business combination creates a strong regional presence for us as it fits in well with our other properties in Central and Northeast Arkansas,” said Jamie Paxton, chief financial officer of PMG. “PMG believes strongly in local journalism and the important role newspapers serve in their communities.”
The weekly newspapers are the Van Buren County Democrat in Clinton, The Sun Times in Heber Springs and the Newport Independent.
David Meadows, publisher of The Courier in Russellville, has been named to the same role for the Log Cabin Democrat, according to David Holgate, PMG Community Newsgroup, LLC Group president.
“I am happy to announce David Meadows as the new publisher of the Log Cabin Democrat. With David’s time in this part of Arkansas, the fit is natural,” Holgate said. “I am confident the community will quickly learn what a quality person they have in David.”
Meadows said he’s excited about joining the newspaper. “I’m looking forward to this new role at the Log Cabin Democrat. It is a great newspaper with an intense commitment to an exciting community,” Meadows said. “The Courier in Russellville is fortunate to be the contract printer for the Log Cabin, giving us a unique perspective on how the combined strength of both papers might better serve readers and advertisers.”
Paxton purchased the paper from GateHouse Media.
“It has been a privilege to own these newspapers and be an important part of the lives of people in central Arkansas. Paxton Media is a company that truly values journalism and is sure to continue the mission of serving these communities well,” said Matt Guthrie, regional vice president of GateHouse Media.
The Log Cabin Democrat has served the community since 1879. It currently publishes a print edition six days a week, Tuesday-Sunday, and hosts an online edition at www.thecabin.net.
