2003 EPpy Awards Entry Period Opens

The entry period for the newly expanded EPpy Awards, which will now honor the best Internet services presented by media-affiliated companies, including newspapers, radio, and TV-cable, opens today.

The awards have been broadened in scope to reflect the revamped Interactive Media Conference & Trade Show, presented by Editor & Publisher and its sister magazine Mediaweek. The conference will be held May 7-9, 2003, at the Paradise Point Resort in San Diego, Calif. Martin A. Nisenholtz, CEO of New York Times Digital, is a confirmed keynote speaker.

Awards will be presented in 29 categories, and entries will only be accepted via the Internet. Three awards will be presented for best overall media-affiliated Web sites: for newspapers, radio companies, and TV-cable outlets. Each of these categories will have two competitions: large and small Web sites by audience traffic. (Previously, EPpy categories were divided according to the parent newspaper’s print circulation.)

In the content-specific EPpy competitions, non-newspaper sites will compete against newspapers for the first time. “The expansion of the EPpys to include radio and TV-cable reflects the growth and maturity of the Internet, where all media sites compete for the time and loyalty of users,” said Matt Pollock, director of conferences and events for E&P.

Judging will be conducted by an independent panel of senior executives representing all major media.

The entry period for the 8th annual EPpy Awards closes at midnight on Monday, Feb. 3, 2003. Finalists will be announced in April.
