The American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors has announced its 2005 inductee to its features Hall of Fame: New York Times veteran Arthur Gelb.
Gelb, 81, is scheduled to be inducted at the AASFE’s annual convention in Denver on Sept. 30. His 45-year career at the Times included time as the editor in charge of features coverage in the Sunday and daily sections of the paper.
As deputy managing editor during the Times’ conversion to a four-section newspaper, he edited the Weekend section, then Living, Home, SportsMonday, and Science Times.
Gelb is currently director of the New York Times Co. Foundation’s scholarship program. He retired as managing editor of the Times in 1990, and served as president of the NYT Co. Foundation until 2000, when he retired.
He joined the Times as a copy boy in 1944 while still in college at New York University.
