Nationwide News of News Ltd, the Australian arm of News Corp. and Australia’s largest newspaper publisher, completed conversion of its Chullora print center to all-digital prepress and platemaking using solutions from Agfa Graphics, Mortsel, Belgium.

To produce such titles as the Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph and the Australian, NWN’s installation includes four Polaris platesetters with full Arkitex production software for use with N91v violet photopolymer plates. The investment in hardware and software was valued at more than US$2.25 million.

The sale brings the total number of Polaris and Arkitex systems used by News Ltd. to eight, with six more to go in this year. Agfa Graphics’ largest newspaper account in Australia, News Ltd. uses approx. 900,000 square meters of Agfa plates per year.

NWN cited improvements in workflow efficiency, waste management and cost containment among benefits of the conversion.

“There was a learning curve for most of us, but everyone is very comfortable now and we are already seeing the benefits,” CTP Maintenance Supervisor Brett Cleary said in a statement. “We are producing 440 plates per hour with four plate lines in full production, and that helps us meet our deadlines.”
