The Akron (Ohio) Beacon Journal has named Mizell Stewart III managing editor, while Susan Kirkman has been appointed managing editor for multimedia and special projects.
Stewart, 40, joined the Beacon Journal in 1994 as an assistant city editor. He left in 2000 as assistant managing editor for local news to become managing editor of the Tallahassee Democrat, another Knight Ridder newspaper. Stewart was executive editor of the Democrat when it was sold to Gannett in August.
He replaces Mike Burbach, who will become the editorial page editor of the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press.
Kirkman, 44, is a 19-year veteran of the Beacon Journal. One of her new goals will be to increase the newspaper’s online coverage.
In a story published today by his newspaper, Stewart acknowledged that it’s currently a trying time for the Knight Ridder-owned Beacon Journal and its sister newspapers. “My No. 1 goal in this period of uncertainty is to strengthen and position the Beacon Journal for a stronger long-term future,” he said.
