Don Waterman, the vice president of operations for Ottaway Newspapers Inc., announced today that Al Getler has been appointed president and publisher of one of Ottaway?s newspapers, The Daily Star, of Oneonta, NY. Getler is a circulation and marketing executive who also has past experience as a publisher of community newspapers. His appointment will become effective on July 31.
Getler comes to The Daily Star after having served as vice president of circulation with Community Newspaper Company. While at CNC, Getler oversaw the marketing, customer service, and distribution for more than 100 daily and weekly newspapers in eastern Massachusetts. Prior to this, Getler worked as vice president of marketing and circulation for the Newspaper Network of Central Ohio, which is a Gannett group.
Getler?s career as both an executive and publisher dates back to when he was the marketing manager at The Press of Atlantic City, NJ. Thereafter, he served as the circulation director for The Record of Troy, NY, the publisher of The Advocate (OH), and the vice president of circulation marketing for Thompson Central Ohio, a strategic marketing group.
In addition to his work at various publications and marketing groups, Getler is also the founder and past president of the Newark Midland Theater Association. He oversaw the $8.5 million renovation of the 1928 theater and established a $3.5 million endowment for it. In 2003, Getler received the Rotary International BRAVO Award for his humanitarian efforts.
