Longtime Albert Lea (Minn.) Tribune journalist Geri Murtaugh, wife of Albert Lea Mayor Mike Murtaugh, died Aug. 9 after battling cancer. She was 48, and died on her 24th anniversary of employment at the Tribune, Sarah Stultz wrote in the next day’s edition.

An assistant editor, Murtaugh started as a reporter and moved up to city editor and lifestyles editor. Her byline carried her maiden name, McShane. As assistant editor, she handled a large share of the pagination responsibilities and work with reader-submitted material. Murtaugh usually wrote features but also covered hard news.

Murtaugh was active in church, school, and club activities with her two daughters. Former co-worker Tom Jones told the Tribune he learned from Murtaugh to “have fun while you work.”

“Geri Murtaugh will always be a huge part of our Tribune team,” said Publisher Scott Schmeltzer. “Our hearts are saddened by this loss, but at the same time filled with love for being able to have the privilege of working with such a giving and generous individual.”
