The Association of Alternative Newsweeklies has announced its 2010 AltWeekly Award winners in three broad areas, each with multiple categories and grouped by circulations 50,000 and over and under 50,000.
Design awards honored cover, editorial layout, illustration and photography. Writing judged arts criticism, arts feature, political column, feature story, food writing, investigative reporting, media reporting/criticism, music reporting/criticism, long-form news story, short-form news story, public service and health reporting. The third area looked at Websites, individual blogs, music blogs, cartoons, “Innovation/format buster” and multimedia, special sections.
The biggest winners included the Nashville Scene, and L.A. Weekly and the Houston Press. Among the winners, a first place in media reporting went to New Times Broward-Palm Beach, “The Rise and Fall of South Florida’s Daily Newspapers,” by Lisa Rab.
