American Community Newspapers has purchased the newspaper assets of Suburban Washington Newspapers Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of The Better Built Group Inc. The deal includes the two weekly Sun Gazette newspapers, which serve Arlington, Va. and Great Falls, McLean, Vienna and Oakton, Va. Terms of the transaction, which was brokered by Dirks, Van Essen & Murray, were not disclosed.
“The Sun Gazettes and their related publications are well established, landmark newspapers that have proudly served the growing communities of Northern Virginia and the surrounding area since 1935,” Gene M. Carr, CEO of American Community Newspapers, said in a statement. “Rupert Phillips, Clint Daws and their management team have done an outstanding job with these newspapers and we are very enthusiastic about their future prospects.”
Donna M. Talla, the current publisher of Suburban Washington Newspapers, will continue her position as publisher.
“We believe that Gene and American Community Newspapers will be successful in the Northern Virginia market and have a solid base to build a great newspaper cluster,” Rupert Phillips, president of Better Built, said in a statement. “We wish them much success in the future as they take this group to the next level.”
