Bob Gorrell of Creators Syndicate has been named editorial cartoonist for the America Online News Channel, and may be the first to ever hold that position at AOL.

“He’s the first cartoonist who has worked with the news staff each day,” said Gary Kebbel, AOL’s news services director.

Every weekday morning, Gorrell and AOL editors select a story to do a cartoon for. The drawing is then posted in the early afternoon, and remains exclusive to AOL for 24 hours.

“A cartoonist can comment on the news in a way someone writing an opinion column can’t,” Kebbel told E&P Online. “We feel that adds another dimension to our news package.”

The 46-year-old Gorrell — a former staff cartoonist for the Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch — works for AOL as a “contracted partner.”
