AP Clarifies Ad Spending Story

By: Steve Karnowski, Associated Press Writer

(AP) A May 22 Dow Jones/AP story about advertising spending reported that newspaper ad revenue grew 8.49% in the first quarter to $4.7 billion, compared with the same quarter last year, according to a survey by CMR, an advertising research company.

That figure does not cover all newspapers, nor those nationally circulated.

The figure was based on a survey of about 450 newspapers in 61 markets. CMR has a separate category for national newspapers, where ad revenues declined 9.29% to $710 million.

A broader survey of the newspaper industry by the Newspaper Association of America found that advertising expenditures on newspapers fell 6.2% in the first quarter to $9.7 billion.
