(AP) An Argentinian journalist was killed in a car accident in Iraq, becoming the 13th journalist to die while covering the war there, the Committee to Protect Journalists announced.
Mario Podesta was traveling with a convoy of journalists trying to get into Baghdad before nightfall Monday when one of his vehicle’s tires exploded 24 miles outside the capital, causing the accident, his news director told CPJ.
A camerawoman traveling with him, Veronica Cabrera, was injured and taken to a hospital in Baghdad for treatment.
CPJ said it was investigating reports of gunfire near the convoy just before the accident.
Podesta, 52, was a veteran war correspondent on a freelance assignment for the Argentine television station America TV, CPJ said. His body was taken to the Palestine Hotel in Baghdad, where many journalists have been staying.
In all, 13 employees of news organizations have been killed while covering the war in Iraq.
