The Argus Leader in Sioux Falls, S.D., filed an appeal Thursday of a May ruling that denied the newspaper access to a list of invitees to a 2005 event organized by Gov. Mike Rounds? Office of Economic Development, the paper reported today.
The newspaper had sued Secretary of Tourism and State Development James Hagen in May to release the list, which had been withheld on the grounds that publication might discourage the invitees (potential business prospects for South Dakota) from doing business in the state.
In May, 6th Circuit Judge Max Gors agreed with Hagen that the roster could be withheld, and ruled against the newspaper?s request.
According to the paper, the lawsuit is a part of its ongoing effort to increase transparency in South Dakota government operations.
