(AP) Rick Rodriguez, executive editor of The Sacramento (Calif.) Bee, was elected treasurer-designate of the American Society of Newspaper Editors during its fall board meeting.
Rodriguez will become treasurer in April, at the group’s annual convention, and rise through the officer ranks each year until reaching the ASNE presidency in April 2005.
“ASNE has a long and deep history of standing for the principles of the First Amendment and improving newspapers,” said Rodriguez, who has been with the Bee since 1982 and executive editor since 1998. “I hope I can carry on these traditions.”
Rodriguez has served on the ASNE board since 1997 and chaired the Diversity, International, and Readership Issues committees.
Rodriguez joins Tim J. McGuire, executive editor of the Star Tribune, Minneapolis, president; Diane H. McFarlin, publisher, Sarasota (Fla.) Herald-Tribune, vice president; Peter K. Bhatia, executive editor, The Oregonian, Portland, secretary; and Karla Garrett Harshaw, editor, Springfield (Ohio) News-Sun, treasurer, in ASNE’s leadership.
