Companies Building Giant Hosting Service

(The Hollywood Reporter) AT&T Corp. and British Telecommunications Plc. say they will jointly

invest $2 billion in a global network of Web sites and e-commerce services as they aim to build

the world’s largest Internet hosting community.

The communications giants are investing the money over three years along with their jointly

owned global communications venture, Concert. The network will include 15 Internet data centers

that are already open in the United States and Europe, with a plan to open 11 additional centers

by the end of the year. An additional 19 centers are slated for launch next year, the companies

say.

The Web hosting services market is expected to quadruple to $16.4 million by 2004, with more

than half the growth occurring outside the United States, the companies say. ‘Today’s

announcement isn’t about real estate,’ AT&T chairman Michael Armstrong says. ‘It’s about moving

more intelligence and content to the edge of the network and getting as close to your customer

as possible — whether they need us in Amsterdam or Arizona.’
