Painted sculptures of late “B.C.” cartoonist Johnny Hart’s Gronk the dinosaur character will be placed in many Binghamton, N.Y., locales starting in the summer of 2009.

The 70-plus sculptures, painted by local artists, will be set up in parks and other places. After the public display ends, some of the sculptures will move to a mall for holiday display.

Sponsors can eventually purchase the dinosaurs, and those that remain will be auctioned. Money raised will benefit memorials to Hart and his family, such as a scholarship at Binghamton University, according to the Press & Sun-Bulletin of Binghamton.

Hart was a New York state resident who died in April 2007 at the age of 76. He was also known for “The Wizard of Id” comic he did with Brant Parker, who died last year, too.

Both Creators Syndicate strips are being continued by family members.
