Chicago Sun-Times baseball writer Chris De Luca has been promoted to sports editor.

DeLuca succeeds Stu Courtney, who earlier this month joined the rival Chicago Tribune as editor of its chicagobreakingsports.com site.

De Luca joined the Sun-Times as a copy editor in 1996 and has been the newspaper’s national baseball writer since 2004. He is also a Major League Baseball analyst for ESPN’s First Take and SportsCenter.

“With his broad, deep knowledge of Chicago and national sports, Chris is perfect for the job,” Sun-Times Editor-in-Chief Don Hayner said in a statement. “I guarantee our sports coverage will be in good hands.”

Before joining the Sun-Times, De Luca was executive sports editor for Contra Costa Newspapers in California and sports editor of the Monterey County (Calif.) Herald. He has also worked for the Escondido Times-Advocate, The Sacramento Bee, the San Diego Union and the Los Angeles Times.

De Luca is the co-author of “Classic Cubs: A Tribute to the Men and Magic of Wrigley Field.”
