Press-Enterprise’s Cass To Lead Group
(Mediaweek Online) Belo is
fashioning a Southwest operating cluster out of its television
stations, newspapers, and cable news operations in Arizona and
Southern California, the Dallas-based company said Thursday.
The arrangement is designed to extend existing businesses, foster
new ones, strengthen relationships among the properties, and
provide economies of scale in newsgathering and other operations.
Named to head the operation starting early next year was Donald
F. “Skip” Cass Jr., 35, who will report to Jack Sander, Belo’s
executive vice president/media operations. Cass is currently a
senior vice president in charge of The Press-Enterprise in
Riverside, Calif. He also manages Belo’s corporate
communications, while reporting to Robert W. Decherd, chairman,
president, and CEO, and will remain in that role.
The Southwest unit, modeled after Belo’s Northwest and Texas
clusters, includes Arizona TV stations KTVK-TV and KASW-TV in
Phoenix, and KMSB in Tucson (Belo also manages KTTU-TV in Tucson
under a local marketing agreement); regional cable news channels
Mas! Arizona in Spanish and the Arizona NewsChannel, joint
ventures with Cox Cable; and in Riverside The Press-
Enterprise, 166,418 circulation daily, 172,798 Sunday, and
the Spanish-language weekly La Prensa.
