Already this winter, two of the largest newspaper publishers, Gannett and McClatchy, have either laid off reporters or shed staff through buyouts. The Seattle Weekly just printed its last issue and switched to a barebones Web operation. Such moves are exacerbating a decade-long decline in newsroom employment. There were 23 percent fewer people working in US newsrooms in 2017 than there were in 2008, according to the Pew Research Center.
