Amos Purnell Bailey — who wrote ”Our Daily Bread,” a syndicated column featuring Bible verses — has died at the age of 88, according to an Associated Press report out of Virginia.

The retired Methodist minister was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and underwent surgery in March, said his stepson, Walter J. Sheffield.

”Our Daily Bread” began in 1945 in the Tokyo edition of Stars and Stripes. Bailey was an Army chaplain attached to Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s staff.

At its peak, the column was syndicated to about 100 newspapers; now, to fewer than 50. A grandson, Rev. Emmett Page of North Carolina, might continue the column, Sheffield said.
