Yesterday, we brought you the story of the now-infamous recent murder/suicide in New Orleans: young man kills his girlfriend, cuts her up and puts her on the stove in their French Quarter apartment, then goes and jumps to his death from a nearby hotel. The couple had gained national exposure a year ago in the press after sticking it out, post-Katrina.
All the ingredients — so to speak — were there for a classic New York Post headline when it got to the story today, and the paper did not let anyone down. GAL-PAL GUMBO, the paper roared over the story (which included a large color photo of the pair in, needless to say, happier times). The subhed: “Katrina guy cooks her & kills himself.”
Somehow the Post restrained itself in burying the story on page 35.
