The Seattle Times Co. is putting its properties in Maine on the block.
The Blethen family, which controls the Seattle Times Co., is seeking buyers for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, the Kennebec Journal, the Morning Sentinel, and MaineToday.com.
“The decision to explore a sale was painful,” Frank Blethen, Seattle Times Co. CEO and publisher, said in a statement. “But a sale may be the best opportunity for the long-term survival of our newspapers in Washington and those in Maine.”
Blethen Maine Newspapers employs about 500 employees, confirmed Chuck Cochrane, CEO and publisher of the division. He does not expect the auction process will affect operations or policies.
The Seattle Times Co. retained newspaper broker Dirks, Van Essen & Murray to assist with the sale.
