ALBANY — Today, after Mike Mercado recalls a customer’s name by the timbre of his or her voice and rings up the final sale with an adaptive talking cash register at the Express Stop convenience shop in the state Education Department building, he’ll conclude a 40-year career.

He’s believed to be the longest-tenured manager among the blind operators of local newsstands in state facilities licensed by the state Commission for the Blind through its business enterprise program.
