Robert M. Powers has been appointed vice president/communications and public affairs for The Boston Globe. Previously, he served as executive director of internal communications.
Powers, 52, started at the Globe in 1981 and has held a variety of positions in promotion, marketing research, advertising sales development, marketing services and internal communications.
In his new capacity, Powers will oversee media communications for both The Boston Globe and Boston.com. His responsibilities nclude external and internal communications as well as community relations.
The Boston Globe Foundation, which annually awards grants to Boston-area nonprofit organizations, will report to Powers. In addition to grant-making, the Globe Foundation creates and runs programs that support the educational and personal development of young people.
