Several prominent syndicated cartoonists will be among the “special guests” at the July 24-27 Comic-Con in San Diego.
The event, now in its 39th year, drew about 125,000 people last summer.
Among the “special guests” are Steve Breen, Mike Peters, Signe Wilkinson (all Pulitzer Prize winners for their editorial cartoons), and syndicated “Ernie’s Pook Comeek” creator Lynda Barry.
Breen does editorial cartoons for The San Diego Union-Tribune and Copley News Service as well as the “Grand Avenue” comic for United Media.
Peters does editorial cartoons for The Dayton (Ohio) Daily News and King Features Syndicate as well as the “Mother Goose and Grimm” comic for King.
Wilkinson does editorial cartoons for The Philadelphia Daily News and the Washington Post Writers Group as well as the “Family Tree” comic for United.
Another “special guest” will be Mike Grell, who assisted Dale Messick on the “Brenda Starr” comic (syndicated by what’s now Tribune Media Services) before embarking on comic book career.
Many of the artists appearing at the Comic-Con do comic books and other kinds of cartooning other than newspaper work.
