Police in St. Johnsbury, Vt., are investigating a reported theft of cash from the circulation department of The Caledonian-Record, which is believed to have been entered Saturday night.
“Everything was fine when I left. I think I was the last person in the building” on Saturday night, Managing Editor Gail Montany told E&P Monday.
The next morning, Circulation Manager Judy Burke discovered the theft from a locked desk drawer in her department.
Montany would describe the loss only as “a lot of money,” adding that for whatever reason the cash never made it into the newspaper’s safe.
Other than the cash, “nothing of significance here, that we can see, was stolen,” she added, noting the presence of cameras and other items of value.
The independently owned Caledonian-Record circulates 10,000 copies Monday through Saturday in northeastern Vermont.
