BUSH NAMES PRESS AIDE

Fleischer To Be White House Press Secretary

L. Ari Fleischer, a campaign spokesman for George W. Bush, will
become White House press secretary, the president-elect’s
transition team announced last week.

Fleischer, 40, earned a reputation as a likeable and
knowledgeable press aide after enlisting with Bush in late 1999.
And the new press secretary has an insider’s knowledge of
Washington: He spent five years as spokesman of the House Ways
and Means Committee, a job he left to serve as communications
director for the failed presidential bid of Elizabeth Dole.

Karen Hughes, the Bush campaign communications director, is to
become counselor to the president, a top job in the new
administration.
